X Factor finalist Ben Thapa dies at 42, confirmed by former band G4 in tribute

G4, the vocal group that gained fame as finalists on ITV's inaugural series of *The X Factor* in 2004, has announced the death of their former member Ben Thapa at the age of 42. The group shared the news on Instagram, expressing their grief: "Words cannot express how we all feel right now."

Thapa was one of the original members of G4, who secured second place in the 2004 competition. He departed from the group in 2018 to focus on his solo music career.

In their tribute, G4 wrote: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our brother and great friend, Ben Thapa. We know this will be heartbreaking news for many, and we extend our love and support as we all remember the wonderful man and the memories he has left behind. Ben was a significant figure in the international singing community and a vital part of our journey as a group. Thank you for your support during this difficult time. RIP Ben xxxx."

Tributes to Thapa have been pouring in. Pianist Chris Glynn expressed his sorrow on X, describing Thapa as "hugely talented, generous, big-hearted & taken far too soon. RIP Ben."

Fans also shared their shock and sadness, with one commenting on G4's post: "Can hardly believe this... he was far too young."

During their X Factor run, Thapa and his bandmates Jonathan Ansell, Michael Christie, and Matthew Stiff impressed judges with performances of classics like Queen's *Bohemian Rhapsody*, Frank Sinatra's *My Way*, and *Nessun Dorma*. Their self-titled debut album, released the following year, featured covers of these popular songs.

Thapa's operatic career included notable roles such as Tito in *La Clemenza di Tito* at Teatru Manoel, The President in *Mittwoch aus Licht* with the Birmingham Opera, and Siegfried in *The Quest For The Ring* at the Royal Festival Hall with Opera North. In 2020, he made his main stage debut with the English National Opera as part of their Carmen education project.
